The tungsten carbide mining button is composed of mining button handle, button head and alloy cutter head. The mining button handle and its cutter head are collectively referred to knife body. Its hardness is 40-45HRC. The pounding tenacity is not less than 49J/cm2.

There are many types of mining button. The general structure is to insert a carbide cutter head into a steel body with low-alloy structure that has been quenched and tempered.

There are two modes of traditional normal mining button:
1. With the abrasion of the tungsten carbide button head, it will be so blunt that it is difficult to cut the rock effectively. When the number of buttons on the roller reaches a certain amount, the tunneling speed will be significantly slower. At this time, it is necessary to stop the machine for examination and replace the button.
2. Owing to the low durability of steel basal body, the working basal body gets a lot of wear before mining button is worn. When it is severely worn, the support for the mining button head is lost so that the alloy is completely detached without being completely used. The mining button ceases to be effective. In order to deal with the failure modes, people improve the wear resistance of the button by various methods which includes using the tungsten carbide with fine performance and high wear resistance and the alloy with high hardness and fine mechanical property as a substrate.

The mining button has low wear resistance. Therefore, we should do the prevention well. Selecting a fine knife body is very important. The property will directly affect the performance of shearer, the power consumption, the stability, and the lifetime of other relevant parts.

The mining button is the main part of mining machinery and tunnel machinery which plays an important role in the cutting of the coal bed and rock formation, coal mining and tunneling. At present, mining buttons are commonly used in coal mines. They are quickly worn out with high power consumption in complex environments. The performance of tungsten carbide mining button is far from the requirements of high-yield and high efficiency.

Defect of Tungsten Carbide Button Tip

Tungsten carbide button tip was first applied to cone bits and then to DTH bits. The history of button bit in China starts from the cone bits in large diameter and DTH bits.


The current round-headed tungsten carbide buttons own the following defects.

Easily Worn:

The button is easily worn in the highly abrasive rock. According to the statistics of the discarded bits, the button of which diameter is 9mm and height of open head is 4mm wastes 75% unworn height. Its diameter is 7mm and the height of the open head has gone down to 3mm. The blunt table diameter of the head quickly exceeds the 2/3 diameter of the buttons. This shows that the speed of the increase of the diameter is faster than that of the wear of head height. It is easily worn out. The resistance reflected by rock is high, and drilling speed decreases to the minimum. As a result, the button has been discarded.

Sharp decrease of drilling speed

The pressure ratio of contact surface between button and rock decreases owing to the large diameter. Especially when the rock is hard or impact energy is not enough, the drilling speed will decrease. When the amplitude of stress wave decreases, the pressure ratio of contact surface between the round-headed button and the rock will also decrease. The stress wave is not effectively utilized, and the utilization of impact energy is reduced so that the raw material has been wasted.

The bottom of button is flat. When inserting the button, the air in the pore cannot be well discharged which generates air cushion. The button cannot be fixed steadily in the bottom. If the bottom is in a concave shape, it won’t generate the air cushion during the button inserting and save the alloy.

Though the tungsten carbide button is solid, it is easily worn and the drilling speed decreases quickly. In addition, the consumption of power is high and the large amount of materials are wasted.

Selections of Tungsten Carbide Rock Drilling Button

Different operating conditions are matched with different types of tungsten carbide rock drilling button in different shapes and sizes. When we design and select the tungsten carbide button, the load conditions of the rock drilling bits should be taken into considerations. The design of the parabolic button can be done with its reference taper angle.


Among all the rocking drilling bits, the most widely used buttons are dome buttons, chisel buttons and parabolic buttons. When the diameter is determined, key factors for rock drilling are intrusive arc r, the cone angle of the tungsten carbide button α and the height of the open head. As for the button, the diameter of the tungsten carbide button are two times as long as the maximum height of open head and minimum intrusive arc.

When we design the tungsten carbide rock drilling button which is applied to the rock drilling bits, the button can be parameterized. And then we can do the virtual design with the use of Finite Element Analysis software. It can shorten the product development cycle and reduce the cost of product testing.

Among the tungsten carbide buttons of which diameter 16 and the height is 25, chisel buttons own the highest level of press concentration and the dome buttons own the lowest level. As for the parabolic teeth, under the same conditions, the maximum stress does not decrease as the reference cone angle decreases.

Moreover, in practical applications, the stress distribution of the dome button is even, and the maximum stress of the dome button is also the lowest among three button types. With the increase of the intrusive arc, the maximum stress decreases gradually. As the parabolic button with the same intrusive arc and the same height of button head, the maximum stress decreases as the reference cone angle decreases. Its maximum stress does not decrease as the reference cone angle decreases. When the intrusive angle is rather small, the level of press concentration of the chisel button is relatively high.
